Fiber or 5G home internet — which should I get in the Philippines?

Choose fiber if it is available at your address and you can accept the contract — it is more consistent and reaches higher speeds, up to 1 Gbps. Choose 5G home internet if fiber has not reached you, if you rent and may move, or if you want to avoid PLDT's 36-month lock-in.

Fiber is better when you can get it

A dedicated line to your building does not degrade because your neighbours came home from work. It reaches much higher speeds, and the top tiers — PLDT Fiber Unli 2699 at 1 Gbps, Converge Super FiberX Ultra at 1 Gbps for ₱2,599 — have no wireless equivalent.

5G wins on flexibility and setup

  • No civil works, no waiting for an installation crew, no landlord permission.
  • Portable — the router moves with you.
  • Prepaid, so no contract and no credit check.
  • Available in areas fiber has not reached, which is much of the country.

A third option people overlook

Prepaid fiber — Converge Surf2Sawa or Globe GFiber Prepaid — gives you the consistency of a fixed line with the flexibility of prepaid. If it is available where you are, it is often the better answer to "I want fiber but not a three-year contract" than 5G is.
