Fair use means an "unlimited" plan gives you a set amount of full-speed data per day — commonly 2–3GB — after which your connection is slowed rather than cut off. You stay connected, but at speeds where messaging and maps work and video streaming generally does not.

Also written as FUP, for Fair Use Policy. It exists so operators can advertise "unlimited" without a small number of very heavy users degrading the network for everyone else. It is not a trick, but it is routinely under-disclosed in marketing, and it is the single most common reason an "unlimited" plan disappoints.
What throttled speeds actually allow
- Around 1 Mbps (Airalo after its 3GB daily cap) — messaging, maps, email, and basic browsing work. Video calls are unreliable; video streaming buffers.
- Around 512 kbps (Nomad after its daily allowance) — messaging and maps still work. Most other things become frustrating.
How to work around it
The cap resets daily, so heavy tasks are best spread across days rather than done in one session. Download maps, media, and documents over WiFi before you need them. And if you consistently hit the cap, a fixed-allowance plan with a larger bucket is often both cheaper and faster than an unlimited plan you are always throttled on.
