What internet speed do I actually need at home in the Philippines?

For a household of two to three doing video calls, streaming, and browsing, 50–100 Mbps is comfortable. One or two people browsing and streaming manage on 25–35 Mbps. Above about 300 Mbps, extra speed rarely changes anything a typical household notices.

Rough guide by household

  • 1–2 people, browsing and streaming — 25–35 Mbps. Converge BIDA Fiber (35 Mbps) or Surf2Sawa (up to 50 Mbps) covers this.
  • 2–4 people with remote work and multiple streams — 50–100 Mbps. PLDT Fiber Unli 1299 (100 Mbps) or Globe GFiber Prepaid (300 Mbps) are comfortable.
  • Large household, heavy simultaneous use, large file transfers — 200–500 Mbps.
  • Above 500 Mbps — worthwhile for frequent very large transfers, otherwise largely a headline number.

What "up to" means

Philippine plans advertise "up to" a speed, which is a maximum, not a guarantee. Real throughput varies with time of day, the quality of your in-home wiring and router, and how many devices are active. Assume you will typically see meaningfully less than the headline figure.

Consistency usually beats peak speed

For video calls in particular, a stable 35 Mbps is a better experience than an intermittent 300 Mbps. If your work depends on it, weight your choice toward fiber over fixed wireless, and toward a provider with a good local reputation over the biggest advertised number.
